Bakery Licence

A restaurant kitchen with licence papers

A bakery licence covers selling bread and other baked goods, but only plain bread: no sausages, luncheon meat or other food products, and nothing containing meat or dairy.

That is why most bakeries today actually hold a food factory licence: if the bread made on the premises may contain meat or dairy, a food factory licence is needed.

Bakery licence FAQ

Does every bakery need a bakery licence?
It depends on the bread sold. A bakery licence covers plain bread only; if bread made on the premises may contain meat or dairy, a food factory licence is needed. Most bakeries today hold a food factory licence.
Why do many bakeries not apply for a bakery licence?
A bakery licence allows plain bread only and is more restrictive; shops usually want to sell a wider range, so most choose a food factory licence.
When is a bakery licence needed?
If a restaurant serves bread to diners, has bread-making machines on the premises and wants to sell bread for takeaway, it must apply for a bakery licence together with its restaurant licence.
