Factory Canteen Licence

A restaurant kitchen with licence papers

A factory canteen is a food business in an industrial building that sells or supplies meals only to people working in that building, for eating in the building. The licence is issued only in industrial buildings.

Apart from serving only the building's workers, a factory canteen's requirements are broadly the same as an ordinary restaurant's. To sell or make food in an industrial or commercial building without dine-in seating, apply for a food factory licence instead.

Factory canteen licence FAQ

Is a factory canteen licence the same as a restaurant licence?
Apart from serving only people working in the industrial building, it is broadly the same. To sell or make food in an industrial or commercial building without dine-in seating, apply for a food factory licence.
How does it differ from a general or light refreshment restaurant licence?
It is issued only in industrial buildings, and a bilingual notice, 「只准本大廈之工廠員工使用」 / "FACTORY EMPLOYEES OF THIS BUILDING ONLY", must be shown outside every entrance, among the seats and at the cashier counter (if any). The canteen must also have toilets, their number depending on the seating, so the shop size should be considered before leasing.
