Siu Mei and Lo Mei Shop Licence

Licensed company service provider · TC008771
A restaurant kitchen with licence papers

A siu mei and lo mei shop licence allows only the retail sale of siu mei (roast meats) and lo mei (marinated meats), and the handling and heating of that food; the food must come from a licensed food factory or another lawful source. Holding this licence does not allow making siu mei or lo mei.

Cha chaan tengs, roast meat shops, fast food shops, supermarkets and Chinese restaurants mostly buy the food in, and need only this licence to sell it. Making it yourself needs a separate food factory licence.

  • The display case must be dust-proof and fly-proof.
  • The display case must be at least 0.72 sq m (1.2 m wide and 600 mm deep).

Special requirements

  • Sharing a shop with another business: where the siu mei and lo mei shop takes up only part of a shop (for example alongside fresh provisions or fruit and vegetables), a floor-to-ceiling wall must separate it to prevent cross-contamination between raw and cooked food; the siu mei part must also meet every licensing condition.

Siu mei and lo mei shop licence FAQ

Can a licensed shop make its own siu mei and lo mei?
No. The licence covers selling, and handling and heating the food, only. Production is usually larger in scale, mostly in industrial buildings, supplying restaurants and supermarkets wholesale, and needs a separate food factory licence.
How do I apply to make and sell siu mei and lo mei myself?
Apply for a food factory licence. Alternatively, where the premises are large enough and fresh or frozen meat is also sold, a fresh provision shop licence and a siu mei and lo mei shop licence can be held together, with the two businesses run separately; the siu mei and lo mei part must be separated from the rest of the building by a brick wall up to the ceiling and have its own entrance facing the street.
