Fresh Provision Shop Licence

Licensed company service provider · TC008771
A restaurant kitchen with licence papers

A shop selling fresh, chilled or frozen beef, mutton, pork, reptiles, fish or poultry must hold a fresh provision shop licence.

The licence covers buying stock in and selling it on, as retail only. Frozen meat that is repackaged or processed before sale counts as further processing and needs a food factory licence instead.

Fresh provision shop licence FAQ

Does selling fresh meat need this licence?
Yes. Any shop selling fresh, chilled or frozen beef, mutton, pork, reptiles, fish or poultry needs it. A frozen meat shop that buys stock in and sells frozen and fresh meat on, for example, needs this licence.
If frozen meat is repackaged before sale, is it still this licence?
No. Repackaging counts as further processing and needs a food factory licence. A fresh provision shop licence covers buy-and-sell retail only; processing before sale needs another type of licence.
What if the meat is cooked, cut or processed before sale?
We advise a food factory licence endorsed for the fresh provision classes needed. Cooking over an open flame with seating for customers needs a general restaurant licence; seating only can be a light refreshment restaurant licence.
