General Restaurant Licence

Licensed company service provider · TC008771
A restaurant kitchen with licence papers

The general restaurant licence, known in Hong Kong as the "big licence", is the broadest restaurant licence: cooking methods are not restricted, and the licensee may cook and sell most kinds of food, rice dishes included.

The shop must be at least 30 sq m and in a type of building where a restaurant may be licensed. Because cooking is unrestricted, the kitchen's height, fire doors and ventilation system face stricter requirements, which must be certified by a professional before submission to the government departments.

General restaurant licence FAQ

What food can be sold under a general restaurant licence?
Most kinds of food may be cooked and sold, rice dishes included. Some restricted foods need a separate application; to sell alcoholic drinks, for example, a liquor licence is needed as well as the restaurant licence.
What is the minimum shop size?
The shop must be at least 30 sq m.
What should the fit-out take into account?
Because cooking methods are not restricted, the kitchen must meet more safety conditions, including height, fire-door specifications and ventilation requirements. The design must be certified by a professional and then submitted to the government departments for approval.
